What is a Super Visa?
With a super visa, parents and grandparents can visit their children or grandchildren respectively for up to 2 years at a time. It is a multiple entry visa which means the parents and grandparents can visit Canada multiple times for a period of up to 10 years.
In case, the parents and/or grandparents want to live for just 6 months or less, they do not need a Super Visa. They need to apply for a visitor visa in such a case.
What are the Eligibility Requirements for Super Visa?
The applicant must be a parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and must fulfil the following conditions:
- The applicant (parent or grandparent) needs to provide a signed letter from their child or grandchild who is inviting them to Canada. The letter must include that the child or grandchild will provide financial support to the applicant. It should also include the list of family members of the child or grandchild living in Canada in the same household. Lastly, it should have a copy of the Canadian citizenship or permanent residence of the child or grandchild.
- The applicant must also have medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company. The insurance must be valid for 1 year. It should have at least 100,000 coverage. It should also have proof that medical insurance has been paid.
- The parent and/or grandparent needs to apply for a super visa from outside Canada.
- The parent and/or grandparent must be allowed to enter Canada.
- The parent and/or grandparent needs to take an immigration medical exam.
Note: Dependents cannot be included in this visa.
How can your Child and/or Grandchild Show Financial Support or Proof of Funds?
First, the child or grandchild who is sponsoring the applicant must meet the minimum necessary income. Then, they need to provide various documents as proof of their funds. These documents include:
- Notice of Assessment (NOA) or T4/T1 for the most recent tax year
- Employment Insurance stubs
- Employment letter including salary and date of hire
- Pay stubs
- Bank statements
Are there any Other Conditions Considered while Issuing the Super Visa?
- Yes, the Canadian government issues the super visa only to genuine applicants who intend to leave by choice at the end of their visit.
- The Canadian government also considers their ties to their home country, the purpose of their visit and their family and finances.
- The overall economic stability and political stability of their home country are also considered while issuing the Super Visa.
What are the Documents Required for Super Visa?
Here is a list of documents that would be required while applying for Super Visa:
- Letter of invitation from the child or the grandchild. The letter must include a promise of financial support during the visit, a list of people in the household, a copy of the child’s or grandchild’s permanent residence or citizenship.
- Proof of funds that the child or grandchild meets the minimum necessary income, employment insurance stubs, pay stubs, bank statements etc.
- Proof of payment of medical insurance from a Canadian company valid for at least a year and has a coverage of at least $100,000.
- Medical certificate
Note: The parent or grandparent must be outside Canada while applying for the super visa.
What is the Processing Time for a Super Visa?
Sponsoring parents or grandparents takes some time. It would take at least 20 to 24 months to get the super visa. This also includes the time for biometrics. The processing times may alter if more documents are required or due to the prevailing pandemic situation. The IRCC is not able to process the applications normally and provides accurate processing times for most applications.
Can you bring your parents or grandparents to Canada permanently?
Yes, it is possible. Children or grandchildren can sponsor their parents or grandparents respectively and help them become permanent residents of Canada. You will have to apply for the visa under the ‘Sponsor a parent or grandparent’ category. You will need to submit an interest to sponsor form and if you receive an invitation to apply, you can apply for sponsoring your parents or grandparents and they can apply to become permanent residents. Can parents or grandparents on Super Visa work in Canada?
No, super visa holders are not allowed to work in Canada. They can only work in Canada if they are permanent residents or citizens of the country. So, they will have to apply for a visa under the ‘Sponsor a parent or grandparent’ category.
