Once you receive your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) or the PR visa, you need to understand your obligations well.
A Canadian Permanent Resident is not a Canadian citizen but the PR status provides them with many benefits, such as:
- They have the right to live, study, and work anywhere in Canada.
- They can access all Canadian healthcare and other social services.
- They are protected under Canadian law.
- They can leave and enter Canada using their Canadian PR card or travel documents.
- They can apply for Canadian citizenship if and when they meet the requirements for it.
The Express Entry program grants you a permanent PR visa. It means that it never expires. You are required to live in Canada for two years (or 24 months) every five years and get your visa renewed after five years though. After three years, you may apply for Canadian citizenship.
