    VISA SUBCLASS 457 (TEMPORARY WORK SKILLED VISA)

    On April 18, 2017, Australia repealed one of the most popular visas in the immigrants - the Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa or subclass 457 visa. The visa was replaced by the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa or visa 482 which aimed to address genuine skill shortages in the country.

    Visa 487 allowed the skilled workers to stay and work (for the sponsor) in Australia for up to two years if their chosen occupation was on the list of eligible skilled occupations, and up to four years, if their occupation was also on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Only those who had been sponsored by an approved business could apply for visa 457. However, if the sponsor was a startup or traded in Australia for less than 12 months, the visa was granted only for18 months.

    Besides working in Australia, this visa also allows you to bring your family to Australia and these family members were allowed to study or work in Australia until your visa was valid. The visa also allowed you to travel in and out of Australia as often as you like.

    This visa was also considered your key to permanent residency in Australia. The immigration agents used to advise people on how to move from visa 457 to PR. Since the visa has been repealed now, no new applications are being accepted under this category.

      Australia will open its international borders in November 2021, The Federal Government will announce the ban on international travel lifted next month which will allow fully vaccinated Australian citizens to return home. Fully vaccinated Australian citizens and permanent residents will be quarantined at home for 7 days, while unvaccinated Australians will still be required to be quarantined at hotels or dedicated facilities for 14 days. The states will gradually open their doors but New South Wales is expected to be the first to welcome international travellers.

      The main reason for this plan is to bring back international students who are stranded overseas. If the Australian government is opening the borders in 2021, it will also resume the overseas permanent resident applications processing.
