PTE Requirement for Australia Permanent Residency
While the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the most popular standardised test to judge one's English proficiency when it comes to migration to Australia, the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) is also accepted. The PTE exam for Australia delivers results within five working days.
Taking PTE for Australian PR can hasten your visa processing as it usually takes IELTS 5-7 days to deliver results if you take the computer-based test and up to 13 days if you take the paper-based test. TOEFL iBT or the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based Test takes up to 10 days to deliver results.
PTE Academic is also preferable because you can use its scores to apply for an unlimited number of institutions (such as colleges and universities as well as visa and immigration authorities of Australia and New Zealand). IELTS allows you to apply to five institutions for free and TOEFL allows you only 4 free reports.
Besides, IELTS have some fixed test sessions per year. TOEFL too offers 50+ test opportunities every year. However, you can take PTE for Australian PR 365 days a year worldwide - allowing you to hasten your visa process further.
How much PTE score is required for Australia?
When a candidate takes PTE test for Australian immigration, one needs to achieve a minimum PTE score to be granted an Australian visa approval. Since there are different visa options to gain the permanent residence (PR) status in Australia, the PTE score required for Australian immigration differs from case-to-case.
Family-stream visas do not require you to take any PTE exam for immigration to Australia. On the other hand, work visas make it compulsory to prove your proficiency level in English.
If you are applying for visa 189 or visa 190 or visa 489 (under the Invited Pathway), you need a minimum score of 50 for each of the four components of the PTE Academic test. The PTE score required to increase your point score by 10 (towards Australian immigration) is at least 65 in each of the PTE Academic test components. If you manage to score 79 or more in each of the test components, you get a buff of 20 points in your point score.
Subsequent entrants (on visa 489) may be granted entry to the country if they manage a PTE score of about 30 in each of the four test components for Australia. However, to gain the PR status, they would have to increase their English proficiency levels later.
